Duluth, MN
Duluth is Minnesotas fifth largest city and is located on Lake Superior in the Arrowhead region. Being located on Lake Superior makes the city a prime location for cargo shipping through the Port of Duluth which is the farthest inland port that is accessible by ocean ships. The city is a large midwest tourist destination, with museums, an aquarium, and lots of summer activities, lots of visitors travel here each year.
Some interesting history about Duluth includes:
- Duluth has access to the Atlantic Ocean which is 2,300 miles away from the city. This is possible by using Great Lakes Waterway and the St. Lawrence Waterway.
- The Port of Duluth was the busiest port during the 20th century, surpassing New York City.
- Duluth has one of the few freshwater aquarium in the US. The aquarium is located in Duluth Waterfront Park and is home to 205 species of fish, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals.
- The railroad museum is another attraction in Duluth. The museum houses seven steam engines, fourteen diesel engines, and 2 electric engines. One of the trains on display is the William Crooks, the first locomotive to operate in the state of Minnesota. Another train is the Iron Range Railway Number 227, a Yellowstone locomotive, which is one of the largest steam engines ever built. Only 18 of the Yellowstones were ever built, Duluth is home to one of only three left today.
- The city holds a Christmas City of the North parade the Friday night before Thanksgiving. This parade happens no matter what that weather is like, snow, rain, and cold temps do not stop this event. Even when it is so cold outside the instruments do not produce music, the bands become a choir to provide the visitors with music.
